About
“A name means nothing, until you make it into something”
This quote epitomizes the path that Blak Majik has chosen to walk. Blak Majik found his place as a part of the Baltimore hip-hop scene in 2005 as a b-boy. Along with a handful of b-boy friends, he founded the dance crew “Groove Crew”, and began performing in shows and competing in battles. From rocking shows, to rocking cyphers he continued to further his knowledge of hip-hop culture, academically and in practice. His breaking background led him to cross paths with many influential people. Through b-boy affiliations, he was introduced to many established DJs. Around the same time, he began pursuing a degree in Electronic Media & Film at Towson University. Combining his studies and personal goals, he focused his attention to the audio and radio production and began spending countless hours in recording studios to immerse himself into the various roles in the music making process.
Blak Majik produced and hosted a weekly radio show on Towson University’s student radio station XTSR called “The B-Side” from 2008-2010. It was the broad audience there that inspired his interest in a multi-genre mixing style. The popularity of “The B-Side” gave Blak Majik the opportunity to open for The Roots, and N.E.R.D. at the spring festival Tigerfest. In late 2008, Blak Majik met Brandon “Bealack” Lackey, co-owner of Mania Music Group and began working at his recording studio, the home of Baltimore based record label Mania Music Group. Shortly thereafter Blak Majik was brought on as the resident DJ for Mania Music Group, and began working in the studio and performing on the road with the Mania artists.
Influenced by the mixing styles of DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ AM, and DJ Enferno, as well as turntablist techniques of DJ As-One, DJ Geometrix and many others, Blak Majik continues to advance in his craft. His love for music, and his experience rocking the crowd helps to fine tune his skills as a turntablist, while he explores paths that many others ignore. Viewing himself as a student of the arts, his musical exploration includes influences from funk, jazz, rock, pop, house, hip-hop, and other genres of music. Blak Majik’s experiences in the music industry range from radio broadcasting, to producing, audio engineering, and of course club and show DJing. Blak Majik, now an established DJ himself, hopes to further his career as a professional DJ and explore what other paths music could lead to.
